Choosing the right caravan can be a daunting task, even if it’s not your first time. To help guide you in choosing the best caravan for your needs, Teesside Caravans have created a first time buyer friendly guide with handy tips to make your experience stress free. Caravans come in different types and sizes, and it’s important to chose the most appropriate to your needs, alongside ensuring you buy your caravan from a trusted and experienced dealership.

Weight

The most important thing to note when shopping for a caravan is the maximum weight your car can tow, as the weight of your caravan should never exceed the weight of your car. It is essential that you buy a sensible match for your car manufacturer’s towing limit. It is common with for many driving licenses to only allow you to tow a maximum combined weight of 3500kg. We recommend that the weight of your caravan with it’s contents should not exceed 85% of the car’s kerb, or unladen, weight. You can find more information about this on the Teesside Caravans website.

Size

There’s a huge range of caravans in all different sizes, and your choice of caravan will depend on what you intend to use it for. Some people prefer to tow small for use when hiking, camping and for road trips. Others may prefer a large caravan with a higher berth, this will however increase the weight and may limit storage options. The most important thing to consider when deciding on the size of your caravan is what’s going to work best for you. A smaller caravan may be ideal for couples, however a 6 berth wide caravan could be perfect for larger families with kids or pets.

Layout

There’s a lot of different options for layouts inside of a caravan, and the perfect layout to you could be dependant on how many people would be sleeping there. A lot of the time layout comes down to a person’s personal preference, and something that works for you may not work for others. For example, fixed beds have become very popular for those who like the convenience of not having to convert the seating area into a bed at night, there is also people who prefer having a more open space in the living space for children to play. Some people enjoy having their own privacy in a caravan’s washroom while others prefer to use the site’s facilities. Ultimately the layout of your caravan should be personal to you and include all of the necessities you require.

Axles

Caravans can be fitted with either a single or twin axle (one or two pairs of wheels). Having a single axle will help you when manoeuvring on the caravan site - perfect for if you’re a beginner. If you have a smaller car this may be the choice for you. Larger caravans need four wheels to bear their fully laden weight and having two tyres on either side of the caravan will give better grip and bring better stability. However, twin axle caravans are heavier so may only be suitable for larger towing cars.

Equipment

The vast majority of caravans are equipped to keep you comfortable with a minimum of: mains hook-up (electricity), heating, hot water, grill/oven, fridge, shower and toilet. Variations in trim levels (wider caravans) will bring dual-fuel hobs with an electric ring plus three gas ones, larger fridges, full ovens instead of combination grill/ovens and plusher upholstery. More expensive features include front sunroofs and upgraded heating systems with mini radiators. There is almost options for more plug sockets and and USB charging points. There is an extensive range of possibilities to feature in your caravan to make it feel like a home away from home.
